Amazon.com was originally named Cadabra, Inc. The name was changed because people heard it as "Cadaver." Amazon.com was selected as a name for size association -- being that the Amazon River is the largest in the world, and also because it would show at the top of alphabetical lists being that it starts with 'A'.
